    Ultra precision gage heads

    The AC operated Linear Ball Bearing (LBB) Series of dimensional gaging probes is engineered for highly precise and repeatable measurements in quality control and metrology applications. LBB within the gaging probe minimize radial play and friction for ultra-precise measurement. Bearing assemblies utilize two circumferential rows of miniature balls held in position by a retainer. The balls ride on a non-rotating plunger hardened to Rockwell 65, Hard-chromed plated and precision ground for optimal repeatability and resistance to brinnelling.

    Ultimate-Precision Digital LBB

    The Ultimate-Precision Digital LBB system consists of DLBB digital probes (or gage heads) daisy chained in a network, using T-Connectors (available separately) with DE-9 connectors. Each DLBB includes a highly repeatable analog AC LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer) probe guided with a precision linear ball bearing, mated to an in-line digital I/O signal conditioning module. The circuitry and firmware feature digital calibration and linearity correction of the digital output position signal with extremely high accuracy.

    The DLBB probes operate in conjunction with our available USB interface module. Our robust dimensional gaging probes are engineered to provide highly precise and repeatable measurements in various industrial, quality assurance and metrology applications.

    The system is based on an RS-485 half duplex, multi-drop network providing plug-and-play functionality. The DLBB probes convert their position signal into digital data which is then transmitted by the RS-485 network using asynchronous transmission (poll/response). The devices support both standard and buffered modes. Our USB 2.0 full speed compliant interface module connects to this network (using a T-Connector) to communicate with and allow data transfer to a computer. When our USB module is plugged into a computer running a WINDOWS® operating system, the Device Manager (in the section
    “Universal Serial Bus Controllers”) of the Computer Management Console displays the name “Meas-Spec Digital LBB Serial Converter”,
    clearly identifying our DLBB device amongst others.

    The available DLBB external power supply is capable of supplying 31 DLBB gaging probes (2 Amps). It features an integral T-Connector which is permanently attached to it. This special T-Connector will interrupt the bus power and switch it over to the external power supply, for all Digital LBB gaging probes connected downstream.

    AC Operated Gauge Heads

    The GCA Series heavy-duty gage heads enable high performance in environments containing moisture, dirt, and fluid contaminants. Gage heads are spring loaded LVDTs (Linear Variable Differential Transformers) with precision linear bearings.

    These robust high-temperature gage heads allow measurements over long strokes up to ±2 inches [±50.8mm]. The spring force is typically 9oz [255 grams] at fully compressed electrical stroke. A removable black-chromed, hardened tool steel tip is threaded (4-48UNF-2A) to the working end. Internal construction prevents the core and shaft from rotating as they move longitudinally. The integral electrical connector (welded) provides for easy installation and allows replacing a damaged cable without sacrificing the sensor. Installation and adjustment are facilitated by an external ½-20 mounting thread and the two locknuts supplied with each unit.

    Like in most of our LVDTs, the GCA windings are vacuum impregnated with a specially formulated, high temperature, flexible resin, and the coil assembly is potted inside its housing with a two-component epoxy. This provides excellent protection against hostile environments such as high vibration and shock.

    The ruggedness, long life cycle, and very high reliability of the GCA Series provide a low cost of ownership over the life of the equipment onto which they are installed. The one-piece front end (barrel which contains the bearing assembly), machined from solid stainless steel bar, coupled with a bronze bushing, has far greater resistance to bending forces and side loads compared to other designs. This is particularly important on the longer stroke versions; it reduces the common risk of probe damage/bending during installation or maintenance of industrial equipment. The GCA Series designs also require fewer parts and weld joints, thereby increasing overall structural integrity and reliability.

    4 to 20mA loop Gage Heads

    The GCT Series heavy-duty gage heads enable high performance in environments containing moisture, dirt, and fluid contaminants. With a spring loaded LVDT, a precision linear bearing, and internal signal conditioning electronics operating on a 4 to 20mA loop, the GCT is ideal for difficult industrial environments and remote locations where sensor power is not readily available and long cable runs are expected. The 4-20mA signal is less susceptible to EMI and RFI interference than low amplitude AC or DC signals.

    These robust gage heads allow measurements over stroke ranges from 0 to 0.250 inch [6.35mm] up to 0 to 2 inches [50.8mm].
